Starting my project on London World Food to celebrate 50 years of Divertimenti I thought I would start with British food, well, it’s one we all know and love. But what is it? Where can I find it and how do I define it? What is modern British food and is it what I grew up with?
British food has traditionally been based on beef, lamb, pork, chicken and fish and generally served with potatoes and one other vegetables. The most common and typical foods eaten in Britain include the sandwich, fish and chips, and pies like the Cornish pasty, trifle and roasts dinners. Some of our main dishes have strange names like Bubble and Squeak and Toad-in-the-hole but is anyone serving these as a British restaurant in London?
Do you know of any British Restaurants in London, not the pub-chain type, but the sort where I could bring a tourist to show them British food that has been made from scratch, food that shows our country and is gravy rather than curry.
