South Devon Chilli Farm

I love exciting food products, I love to see how British cuisine is evolving, and I love global fusions of products that form our staple foods.  Chilli Jam is not a new concept, but this one is spectacular from the South Devon Chilli Farm.

The innovative South Devon Chilli Farm was established in 2003.  Set up by Steve Waters, it was the first commercial farm in the UK entirely devoted to growing chillies. Over 10,000 chilli plants are now grown on the farm and tonnes of fresh chillies are harvested each year.

South Devon Chilli Farm has a Mexican approach to the chilli.  In Mexico it’s not just about heat but about the depth and range of flavours.  Through studying Mexican cookbooks they began to get a much greater understanding of this versatile ingredient.

Many new skills had to be learnt and techniques perfected over the years, from the best ways of raising chilli plants from seed, to the precise controls needed to make chocolate products. South Devon Chilli Farm now make and wholesale chilli sauces and preserves; a range of chilli chocolates; dried chilli products; chilli growing kits; chilli-theme gifts; chilli seeds; fresh chillies and chilli plants.

Commenting on the success of the business, Steve Waters, founder and chilli expert says: “We are extremely lucky in Devon to be surrounded by businesses, producers and customers passionate about buying local and supporting the region’s vast array of fantastic products.  This was a huge factor of our success in the early stages of the business and continues to be key now, along with an ever increasing demand from both across the country and internationally.”

Another factor adding to the company’s success is its celebrity following.  A-list actress Gillian Anderson is a huge fan of South Devon Chilli Farm’s chilli chocolate and the ever popular Jamie Oliver says that ‘these guys grow the best chillies in the country’.

South Devon Chilli Farm has an on-site farm shop and café. The products are available on-site, on the website www.sdcf.co.uk and in delis and independent stores, nationwide.
