In 2008 I co-presented the second part of a 2 part series called Food Adventures on the Silk Road in China. The series won Best Documentary at the China TV and Radio Awards in 2011 and the book accompanying the series won a Special Award of the Jury at the Gourmand World Cookbook Awards on Saturday past.
The concept of the series was to show how the food on the Silk Road (the world’s original trade route) has influenced our food in the West. In each episode a Westerner, a Muslim and a Chinese Chef each travelled together over 40 days and many miles. For me, it was the experience of a lifetime. Cooking on the Great Wall of China, in the Gobi Desert and many other fascinating locations within this Ancient land.
I had met all of the presenters in the first series except one, Chef Wu Zhi. It was thrilling to see him win an award at the Gourmand World Cookbook Awards for the book accompanying the series.
The series is currently one of the highest rated TV series broadcast in China.
