Are coconuts the new Superfood?

It is amazing how trends go around in circles. I remember last year how earmuffs had come back in to fashion again having last been seen in the 1980’s, although with a different style!
Last night in my snoop around the supermarket to see just how easy it is for a consumer to buy the British Bacon that I blogged about yesterday, I noticed coconut water was back on the menu.  I first discovered coconut water in 2009 when I was at an International Federation for Home Economics meeting in Jamaica. It was very popular in this part of the world.
So with this in my thoughts, during my daily dig around blogs today I found an article in Cosmopolitan Magazine about coconut water and how endorsements by Rihanna and Madonna (is she still relevant in this era of Gaga?) helped sales rise by 50%.  Did you know that unsweetened coconut water (or CoYo as it’s affectionately named) has many health giving properties:
  • Lowers cholesterol
  • Boosts energy
  • Helps with weight loss (but so does drinking any liquid as it fills one up)
  • Improves the immune system
  • Promotes healthy, shiny hair
  • Softens and rejuvenates skin (see last weeks Horizon on the BBC re UVA sun damage)
Now, CoYo, the latest entry to the market is a coconut yogurt.  The new yoghurt, which is available in natural, mixed berry and pineapple flavours, is unlike any yoghurt currently available. Not only does it tick all the ‘free from boxes’ being dairy free, gluten free, soya free, lactose and sugar free, with probiotic cultures, but it does so in an exciting new way, using coconut milk to replace dairy and a natural sugar alternative, called Total  Sweet xylitol, which is made from birch wood, to replace sugar.  Not only is it award winning but I think its yummy.
All good information to know, but in the end, surely we should overall just look at a healthy balanced diet, eat our greens, carbs and protein in a mixed bunch and snack on fruit and veg.  What do you think?
