Yes, I know.
I’m sorry. I know it’s been a long while since I last checked in. A long, long while. I’m loathe to check the date tag on my blog post to confirm just how long it has actually been. The reason that I’ve neglected this site, as you might expect, is that I’ve been travelling, partly for work purposes and partly for a much needed rest. I recently inspected my passport, which isn’t as egocentric an activity as you might expect, and was delighted to see just how many stamps and visa slips are included in there. Not all airports in the world will mark your passport, so I am always pleasantly surprised when they do. If I’m feeling bolshy, then I will ask them to do so, but that very much depends on how fierce the officials at the passport desk look.
As I flipped through the pages, and admired the font and design of each individual stamp, I mentally totted up not only all the air and road miles I have clocked up, but also all the hours that have been spent thousands of feet up in the air or tootling along a motorway. The latter is fine if you are driving in a top down rental car on a stretch of Miami highway. Sadly, the long ribbons of tarmac which stretch across England are not quite so pretty to look at or interesting – and it’s difficult to play I Spy with yourself.
I could tell you that in the past year alone I’ve been to New York, Toronto, Virginia, San Francisco, Abu Dhabi, Paris and, last but certainly not least, Sligo, but I don’t want to sound like an atlas. I certainly don’t want to cram them all into one blog post, because it would be a disservice both to the fascinating and diverse culture that I discovered in each of these locations and the hospitality of the people who live there. Instead, over the next week or so I’ll be firing up some individual blogs on each of these destinations: why I went there and what I encountered when I did.
So do please keep checking back. We’ve got a lot of catching up to do.
